DANS LA NUIT (France, 1929)
regia: Charles Vanel; sceneggiatura: Charles Vanel; fotografia: Georges Asselin; cast: Charles Vanel, Sandra Milovanoff; 35mm, 75'; provenienza: Institut Lumière

Love, identity, dream and reality are the main themes of this forgotten masterpiece of French cinema, first shot, behind the camera, of an actor-director who gave to French silent cinema a movie similar, for its artistic quality and its critical fortune, to the other rare pearl of movie history, The night of the hunter, by Charles Laughton. Recently restored by the Cinémathèque française, Dans la nuit has been set to music, on Bertrand Tavernier's request, by Louis Sclavis who paid tribute with a powerful and elegant composition to this movie that, as M. Sclavis himself says, "mixes Murnau and Renoir".

A young and charming countryman is seduced by a vamp from the city and induced to kill his wife but, incapable of doing such an evil deed, he just frightens the woman and makes her run away. He follows her, reconciles with her, they celebrate their renewed love in a dreamlike, excessive, disproportionate town: the visionary raptures of a simple mind stunned by big city's greatness. But their love is still in danger... One of the best movies in history - "the best one ever made" wrote in 1957 the Cahiers du Cinéma - Sunrise represents the sum of the first thirty years of the Seventh Art.
